You could also check out GMAX at

, which is a free, but very limited version of 3D Studio MAX. I've
written some scripted functions for G-Code I/O and toolpath
generation for 3D Studio MAX which I use along with Master5 CNC and a
converted Taig mill.
These scripts mostly also work with GMAX if you want to try them, but
I'm afraid that GMAX can't make use of the Active-X control that
Art's got for Master5.
There's also a script for DXF import to GMAX at
http://gmax.digitalarenas.com
You can't import an STL file, but it should be possible to write a
script for that.
