Smoke,
you can get IntelliCAD for free and it does .dxf as well as .dwg files. If you're having
trouble opening a dxf file you might do better with IntelliCAD because it will give you a
large selection of .dxf files, meaning that you have a choice between generic dxf, ascii
dxf, binary dxf, autocad 12, 13, 14, 2000 dxf files.
I used to use QuickCAD and finally went to using IntelliCAD, I do have AutoCAD R14 but
for most of what I do know it's overkill. So I just use IntelliCAD. Almost all of the
design work I do now is 3D, so the only time I'm using 2D cad is when I'm breaking down
the model into 2D cad files for plans.
