There are helical cuuplings made specifically for encoder driving, which are
pretty limp in the axial and radial directions, but are extremely stiff in the rotational
direction. They are not terribly expensive, about US $15 - 25. I get most of
this stuff from the W. M. Berg Co., in Long Island, NY. Some of the toothed
belt sprockets cost more than this. In my own setup, motor torque is not
transmitted through one of these couplings, although I suspect they would do
fine in that application.
