Several years ago I had a woodchuck type device for my router. This sends
the router along an x axis via cables and spins a piese of wood between
centers with some gearing. I used it for turning table legs, newel posts,
etc. I had a lot of problems with shavings and dust getting into the cables.
What I did was to build an open topped wooden box around the cable and
extending past the pulleys. The ends were capped, but inside at each end
was a large wooden pulley. A piece of flexible vinyl was attached to the
router carraige and ran across the top, down one pulley, through the box and
up around the other pulley to attach to the other side of the carriage. As
the carriage went back and forth, the vinyl slipped around the pulleys.
This kept the worst of the crap out.
I was looking at making a telescoping metal cover, but I moved and sold the
thing. Haven't really missed it, it had a lot of other design problems.
