And don't forget that they were made from Iron/steel that they had to mine and
smelt themselves. No Bessemer process etc., so medium carbon was about the
best they could do, but the same is true for Samurai swords, as well. Lots of
difficulties, though not so bad as Sigurd faced. According to the Saga of
Sigurd, when he made his legendary sword, the first thing he had to do was kill
a dragon in order to use it's heart for his forge fire.....:-)
