I am not sure what types of software you buy, but very short grace periods
for free upgrades is quite common in more specialty and commercially
oriented software. Broad interest consumer type software will frequently
have a more liberal upgrade policy in my experience. I buy a fair amount of
server and developer type software and the free upgrade is usually only for
the period between the announcement of the new version and the release. If
you bought before the new version was announce you normally pay for the
upgrade. Of course much of this type of software charges 15% - 25% of the
software cost in maintenance and then you get "free" upgrades.
I have paid for all my Vector upgrades and feel they have been money well
spent.
