Tim, Bill, list,
This is one of those hard to regulate type topics, IMO. The thread
originated as a "plug" by Doug Y for what could be a useful tool to
the homeshop people on this list. Then it went all over the place.
Parts of this thread are VERY pertinent to the CCED membership. I
myself have run into the "machine shop" mindset when I have needed
something beyond my ability (or my shops capability) to produce.
Learning HOW TO INTERACT with those who make their living making
parts is extremely useful to the home CCED'er, IMO.
AND it is also helpful to the machine shop owners. All machine shops
have had someone come in who has no idea how to approach us. To let
this "homeshop" group see the "other side" of what they might be
asking of a machine shop can certainly be included as part of the
process of building a CNC, DRO, or EDM; at least for those who do not
feel capable of "doing it all themselves"...
We spend list time discussing how to order from mcmaster-carr, and
how to specify ball screws/nuts, where to buy, etc. Spending some
time discussing how to enlist the aid of professionals in our quest
is on-topic, for sure...
Hope this helps.
