Smoke,
This might help. The motor is driven to the "beat" of the
encoders' "drum". In other words, the encoder is setting the target,
to which the motor position is driven...
It's really just a "which came first, chicken or egg" thing. You can
think of moving the motor, THEN checking the position with the
encoder.
Or you can think of checking the encoders current position, THEN
moving the motor if it is not where we want to be.
We drive the motor 'til it "matches" the encoder. Or we drive the
encoder with the motor, until the position indicated is what we want.
Either way we look at it, we are attempting to remove the error
between "reported" position, and "desired" position. At up to many
thousands of times per second.
