You might start by looking at the site www.geckodrive.com
This basic module costs about $100. If you only need a fairly
small torque capability, a stepper motor probably would be
cheaper, but at larger sizes the DC motor is cheaper.
For really small things you may be able to salvage a stepper motor out
of an old floppy disk drive. There are sometimes bigger ones in
printers - the older and heavier the printer is, the better change of
finding a big motor inside - but alas some of these printers will
use things other than stepper motors (brushless ac servos, etc).
