I first became interested in Linux because of the EMC project but I
still didnt actually make the switch from windoze for quite awhile
then as I started to learn more about Linux it became more and more
obvious that Linux was the superior OS
but thats not the reason the guys at the NIST chose Linux ,in fact the
first choice was a realtime add-on for windoze but the price tag and
licencing restrictions would have made this impractical at best and
also would have gotten in the way of the project goal to make EMC
an open system ,meaning open architecture AND open source ,the
NIST being a fedral agency could not copyright the code so it had to
be open source by default
and by a strange mix if luck and timing there just happened to be an
open source realtime Linux project getting started just about then
so it was never anyones the intention to recruit Linux converts
that has just been one of the fortunate 'side effects' of EMC
