Ray, Fred
This notion of a reliable but geeky OS running unseen beneath a user-
friendly GUI sounds awfully familiar. Isn't that what Mac OS X
offers,
built on an open source variant of Unix rather than Linux? Is it
possible that after a decade or more of being presumed irrelevant to
CNC, the new Mac OS might change the picture for that platform? That
would be great news for the fine arts community, where the Mac has
considerable acceptance, and where the lack of CNC capability is a
frustration.
Cad and 3D modelling on the Mac is readily available, if not as wide
a
selection as for MS Windows, but better than for Linux. Possibly a
real-time patch for Unix already exists. If EMC could be ported to
(Mac
OS X) Unix, then that leaves CAM, but somebody would probably jump in
to fill that gap if the the other two ends were in place.
