Hi Fred,
Like a lot of others, you seem to be under the misapprehension that you need
to understand linux in depth to be able to use EMC - well you don't. If you
install the BDI on a clean machine you will probably look at the result and
think - hell, its gone and installed Windoze. The KDE desktop is as close to
windoze as makes no odds - OK, its got a big 'K' instead of a 'Start' button
but it does the same job ;o) and actually running the programs is just the
same as in windoze. Granted, in the early days when this list first started,
running linux was more like fighting with DOS but the two OSs are now
cosmetically so similar that you granny could easily do the swap (even my
wife works both systems without batting an eyelid!!!)
You would have to set up EMC to work with your particular machine but this
is only a matter of changing a few values in a text file and you can then
create an icon on the desktop for this particular app.
If you want to run from a remote machine, the BDI comes with VNC - run the
server on the EMC machine and the client on the windoze machine and you can
actually see the EMC screen on your windoze machine - create the g-code on
the windoze machine, post it across the network using SAMBA (once set up its
transparent) and then fire up vnc to watch the linux box do its stuff.
After fighting to set up win2k on two machines over the last few days,
setting up the BDI is a breeze!
