Heatsinking the G210's ??

on 2002-02-14 19:35:39 UTC
Hi All,

Well, my trio of G210's arrived yesterday. Man, Gecko drive is fast
if anything else. Less than 24 hours to my door.

Anyway, aside from now being TOTALLY lost on the multiplier issue on
the G210's vs the G201s (thanks all ;-) ), I am preparing to mount
the drives. (BTW, I got the G210's because Master5 is on my list of
software I wish to try and I got the impression that 8xxx steps per
second via the motherboard timer might require this "multiplier")
Now here's the question....and it's not covered in the manual....

The G210's already have a sort of heatsink on the back. That little
steel wafer that's screwed to the back.
I am planning to use the giant aluminum heatsink that is original to
the Bridgeport Boss (about 1' X 3.5'..yes, feet).
Now what I don't know is if you are supposed to remove the
original "wafer" and re-attach with that white gooey stuff to the new
sink, or leave the "wafer" on and goo *it* to the new heatsink.
Now, my first impression would be that you goo *it* to the board,
however, it looks to me as if you would actually *have* to *goo* *it*
because there are no mounting ears whatsoever on the little board.
This is what has thrown me off and made me think that they want you
to remove the original and use the two screw holes that mount the
wafer to the G210.
If you are not supposed to remove the "wafer" then why on earth would
they not have mounting ears? (maybe even break off ones)
Of course, I could just call them tomorrow, but I figured maybe more
than one person (I) would like to know this.

Many Thanks
Sean
P.S. what do you call that white gooey stuff (hehe...seriously)
