Ok. I will contribute something. An opinion on a CAM programming language.
I do not believe APT is obsolete.
Underutilized, perhaps, but it still has features that many GUI-based CAD/CAM
programs do not.
In particular, parameterization. You can program a complex design in APT based
on some named values. You can then modify these values, re-run the program, and
get your design appropriately modified for the new parameters.

I also have something else to contribute. An opinion on attitudes and manners.
This is the first time in a long time that anyone has posted anything which even
*hints* at unhappiness with either Fred or Vector.
Yet the immediate reaction from Fred is this ad hominem attack against the
author of the posting.
Most postings have only praise for Vector.
If Fred reacts like this to negative postings, I do not find it surprising that
no one posts negative criticisms (constructive or otherwise) of his product.
