I ran into a similar problem on a smaller scale. Not trying to be over
simplified but when the stepper motor stalls it misses steps and Growls.
Not knowing what the holding toque on your Stepper Motor is it sounds like
it is maxed-out and the table has less resitance one way than the other, so
it is always on the verge of slipping. could be your anti-backlash nut is
the final straw. This is just a guess but it happened to me pretty much the
same way.
