Jeff,

All things considered, it's best to use the PC +5VDC. A lot of "wall
warts" say they are +5VDC but are not even close.

Put a DC voltmeter on PC ground and DIRECTION. Toggle the direction
output and see if you have 0V for a logic "0" and +5VDC for a
logic "1".
