You can pick it up from the mouse port or game port if it has one. If
you are going to get the +5 from the transformer how are you going to
complete the circuit with the step and direction signals? That is what
the + 5 does. It is not a voltage supply except for the optos and if you
don't have this coming from the computer then you will not have any
motion.

This issue seems to give many people problems. I other drives where you
connect the drive to gnd and the step and direction pins you are using
the step and direction pins as the + 5v source and just not calling it a
positive. In the Geckos you are using the step and direction pins as a
gnd and then need the +5v as the common to complete the circuit.
