In an earlier reply, I thought chip thickness was the same as feed per tooth,
but now I'm not so sure. The 5 variables are :

Tool / workpiece materials => SFPM

Tool size => RPM

Width (or depth) of cut

Length of cut

Feed per tooth (.001 is good for 1/8" end mills, .050" might be good for a 1" cutter)

There is no simple formula to make these choices, but general rules of thumb
are very useful.
