Hi Peter:
The standard way to do this on a machine without rigid tapping (Spindle
orientation and synchronization with Z axis feedrate) is to use some kind of
floating tap holder.
This allows pitch mismatch between the tap and the z axis motion.
Another way is to use a tapping head; this will make its own Z axis motion,
driven by the tap.
Without an encoder on the spindle and a way to tie spindle rotation very
accurately to Z axis motion, you will snap your taps off or chew up the
threads.
The safest way on an uncontrolled machine is to use a tapping head.
Procunier makes some nice ones, so does Tapmatic.
