I do it on a Bridgeport WITHOUT a spindle encoder by the use of
a Procunier "CNC" tapping head. It is a pretty big unit, however,
and would not fit on a Taig. There might be a similar, but smaller unit
available. It consists of a set of cone clutches and a reversing gear.
The spindle runs at a constant speed, and the forward clutch is
engaged as the tap is pressed into the work. When the spindle
retracts, the axial pulling force engages the reverse clutch, and the
tap spins out of the hole.
