I built one of the four axis boards from Hobby CNC for a friend. Not to bad
and he is using it with his CNC foam cutter. The kit that he bought had 400
s/r motors, they are small and the machine he made moves fast enough to cut
the foam well.
I made my controller from the plans found at this web page,
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~ih/doc/stepper/control2/3axis/
I even went so far as to etch and drill the PCB. I have not achieved any
great speed but that is not the boards fault the power supply I am using is
only 5 volts. I am in looking for the right power resistors to move up to
12 volts. I have the parts to build a 24 volt power supply but the
resistors for that are proving hard to find as well.
In closing the cheep boards and kits are a good start if you have the time
and skill to build them. For small bench top systems they work with in the
limits of most home built from small parts machines. I would not try and
use them to convert a full size mill or lathe.

What are some others experiences with the lower cost stepper drivers,
i.e. hobby cnc, etc...for the smaller nema 34 and 24 steppers?
