Well you have an advantage with a retired engineer nearby. Look at
www.linuxcnc.org for info about the EMC software. The servo interface boards
mentioned will certainly handle analog(ue) signals out to the Gettys drives
and to the spindle as well.
We'd need to look at the position feedback and see if they are encoder with
quadrature signals or if they are resolver. If encoder the boards will
directly handle their signals. If they are resolver then you will need some
interface card that sends sine waves to the resolver, takes the return
signals and makes them into quadrature pulses. There are a couple of makers
of such cards.
Then we would have to write some custom I/O for the auxiliary devices if
there are any that you really need to run.
IMHO we will have to do a bit of work to the EMC code if you need hard
tapping.
