Hi Paul
It depends on what you feel is affordable, of course, and how much
accuracy you want. When I get around to cnc'ing my future mill, I'll
want as much accuracy as I can get per unit dollar. So I have done
some searching.
The ballscrews are typically .003" lead error per foot, for a rolled
screw. To get better than that, usually, you have to have them
ground, which explodes the cost. But, in searching, I have found a
few companies that offer better lead error. My fave so far, is
Thomson-Saginaw which can offer .001" per foot in a non-ground
(rolled) screw. Their .625 dia screw is about $60 for a 30 inch
piece, plus another $40 for a search for a piece that truly is .001"
per foot. This all according to Thaniel, who is their application
engineer. Call 1 989 776 4123 or 1800 554 8466.
The ball nuts are not cheap. For a preloaded (non-backlash) nut, it
is $135 per nut. Again, once you've done the hard work and spending,
it might make sense to buy good screws and nuts. Otherwise, check out
MSC and Rockford to get less accurate, but cheaper items.
Happy cutting. Tom.
