OK--one vote so far that the 2.5 amp bipolar drive from xylotex may not be enough (thanks Bob). Anyone have experience converting an Enco mill/drill table to cnc? Anyone pushed their 2.5 amp cnc to the limit and want to share your performance? Any help would be appreciated--just keep in mind that I am on a tight budget and am no E.E. Here are the specs. on the Enco slide table:
*11" X 7-1/2" travel
*10TPI leadscrews
*The y-axis probably moves 35-40lbs with an empty table
Do I have any choice but to buy a high dollar cnc controller (geckos are high dollar to me!)? The ideal system would be able to make cuts with a router or milling head (cutting steel would be nice), have a 60 i.p.m. rapid and cut at around 10 i.p.m. minimum. By the way, xylotex suggested a nema 23 powermax II 253oz-in Bipolar motor (2.3 amps bipolar series). Thanks for any replies.

First determine what stepper motors you are going to use with them. The
xylotex board is limited to 35 volts.

As a general rule, if you divide the 35 volts by 20 you would get 1.75 volts
as the voltage for the stepper motors.

You can ask others, but I think that 2.5 amps may not be enough.

You may want to save up your money and buy Gecko drives.

Before I go out on a limb and buy one, does anyone see anything wrong with
this system for a small cnc? I have an Enco mill/drill table that is
slightly larger and heavier than a Taig's. I don't know what to use as a
spindle yet (I guess just a router for now). Is 2.5 amps bipolar enough? I
would greatly appreciate any help from those more experienced than me
(probably 99% of those reading this right now). My problem is that I can't
afford geckos, and don't want to buy a unipolar driver board and be
disappointed with the performance.
