Part of the problem is the wide range of people represented here. To a
person using salvaged copy machine steppers and driving a Dremel with
threaded rod lead screws, 10IPM rapids are great. Others need or want
100IPM rapids. It all depends on the context.
Speed and accuracy cost money.
I would recommend doing a drawing first. Use pencil and paper if you
must. Don't spend a year designing the machine, just put some things on
paper, look for interferences between parts, and jump in. You may go
through several redesigns while learning, but that's the objective in
some cases. Search the net and read everything you can. Read about high
end systems and distill their ideas down into something usable at your
level. Read about low end systems and learn the things to avoid.
