Very much ON TOPIC.

To help see what common is, hook 2 batteries in series and bring out three
leads..........Which is the common?????
It can be any one of them depending on a +3 volt, -3 volt, or a +1.5 and a
-1.5 volt output.

Common is simply the point that the other voltages are referenced to.
Nothing more, nothing less.....

If I stand in front of you and hold my hand out in front of me and ask is it
up, or down. There is no correct answer, without knowing what I am
referencing to, the floor, or the ceiling.
