Group,
Just my opinion here, but I don't think a hobbyist should buy any
CAM program until they can program "long-hand" in their sleep.
- Should you not buy a car until you can walk to your destination?
- Should you not buy a fuel injected car until you can tune a carbureted
engine?
- Should you not automate a mill until you can fashion your parts by hand?
I think a theoretical knowledge of the basic components of a mill (including
the machine language that runs it) is enough. The point of the software is
to abstract away the actual complexity of what you are doing. Unless you
like to write code, just try to find software worth buying. Unless you like
to wind your own motors, buy them to. Unless you like to build your own
electronics hardware, buy the motor controllers also. Intimate knowledge of
how these items work is not necessary.
If you can't afford good software, learn how to program G-code, or make good
software.
