The original design ran the top of the angle against the bottom of the
table. If this is a problem you can take a flat piece of aluminum bar
and run it along the bottom of the table, using it as a spacer.

The original design also used a bolt straight through the angle,
running perpendicular to the down part of the angle bracket. If you
have the capability, I'd suggest notching a piece of aluminum rod at a
90 degree angle, drilling a hole in the middle, and making yourself a
captive (and self aligning) washer. You might also be able to find
some flat head bolts that could be used. You will probably run into
spacing problems if you want a spacer in the center.

Another option is to just make a beveled cut on a piece of wood that's
the same size as the angle. That gives you a filled triangular cross
section matching the inside of the angle. Two flathead screws bolt
the angle to the wood, and a good woodscrew will hold the triangle of
wood to the L angle.
