Hi Dave,
With a level playing feild, I don't think there would be much of a
difference between 1/8 and 1/10 stepping modes. As Alan pointed out,
the Gecko does have the mid-band instability factor taken into
account, which the Allegro chips do not. This certainy could be an
issue, but many people run their CNC mini-mills without the
compensation (Xylotex and other uncompensated drives) with no
problems.
When it comes down to $$$, for the lower power requirements CNC
machine range, I (biased opinion) beleive the Xylotex stack up nicely
to the Geckos.
