perpendicular to the lathe Z (spindle) axis.
I was wondering about the 40 position specification I had on
the spec sheet (I don't have the machine running yet), but I
read somewhere that there is a 40 tooth spring loaded ratchet
inside, allowing the turret to turn in only one direction.
Presumably, on a tool change, the stepper rotates the turret
(always the same direction) by some amount, and when in position
for the requested tool, the stepper reverses and jams the ratchet
into and against the current tooth (thus locking it rigidly and
repeatably into position).
Simple and neat, but not time optimal as you can't move the shortest
direction to the next tool, you always have to turn the same direction
when changing tools. But good enough!
Probably this could be duplicated without too much experimentation....
