Oh, another thought or two (our son was in a car crash Sunday evening and
my concentration is not all it usually is...)

I did install the 47pf lowpass caps that Jeff recommended several weeks
back. That was the penultimate fix--solved 95% of the random steps (well,
100% when the spindle motor was off)

And unfortunately I only have a cheap digital VOM so I don't have a
sensitive way to measure current or voltage spikes. Gross stuff, yes (like
how much current the Xylotex board is actually drawing from the 24V supply)
but not subtle stuff.
