Thank you David, Don, Jeff, Jeff, Alan and Ballendo for your replies.
My two "nice" parallel cables (one a Belkin and one a CMS) each have all 25
conductors present, all individual ground lines (no "cross" continity,) and
continuity between the metal shells at each end. I am assuming that the
shells are connected through the shield/drain wire, but just the continuity
is enough to cause problems.
At the PC end the DB25 shell is connected to the chassis and thus AC line
ground. At the controller box, the chassis is connected to AC line ground.
So I must isolate the DB25 shell from the controller chassis. Ballendo's
analysis is right. I think all in all the cleanest way for me will be to
mount a sheet of fiberglass in an oversize cutout in the controller box
front panel and use regular metal-shell DB25 connectors (I have a whole bag
of them already...)
Best regards,
Randy
