At first Ballendo I thought the same as you that the extra length
beyond the joint would cause a problem but this is not the case. If
those levers as you describe them were shorter the situation would be
exactly the same and if the machine cannot handle a leverage beyond
the plane of the pivots then it will not be very good when it comes
to milling anything.
The main proble is clearly the geometry of the legs, it is a table
with six legs not a self supporting/stiffening structure as it
stands. The bad effects of U joints will really appear when you try
to move the table on purpose (there are certain times when they will
tend to lock up if the movement is not done correctly) and any play
will feel rather more like play than just general floppyness.
