Hi Alf,
Alt-F2 and Alt-F3 and sometimes even Alt-F4 will give you different
console windows to work in. It should switch instantly if I remember
right..
On your CD image, have you checked the CRC (think its called MDF???) for
errors yet? Maybe you had some corruption in your download? Just an
idea.
If you can get a console, look in /var/log/messages for any errors.

The other thing I could think of is you have an incorrect driver installed
somewhere and its locking up everything.
