Fred,
I meant to mention this in the last post and it is in reference to safety. Series 1 and 2 Bridgeports are very top heavy and have a small base. They will turn over much easier than one would suspect. I used to help a guy out with a small machine shop part time in the evenings after work. One night I went out there and the mill was laying on its side in the floor. They busted the power feed right off of it. They were trying to load a big cast iron wench housing up in it for me to face and put holes in. They said they cranked the table out, set the housing down with a towmotor, backed out and the mill flipped right over. The housing was a just a little over 200 pounds. We got it back up and it seemed to be ok. I'm sure it didnt do it any good. In all, I've seen three of them turned over. The other two were flipped while moving with a towmotor and not chained to the mast.

That's being realistic about what someone will try to do at home with
a CNC Bridgeport and no other larger equipment available.
A 6 inch mill vise alone weighs between 75-100 pounds. I can't
imagine not trying to put two vises on a CNC Bridgeport table,
leaving a section on the end of the table for a 5c indexer or table
clamping, drilling or whatever. Obviously it would be better to
mount them balanced on opposite sides of center (over the knee
screw), but to save a setup, some might not. I'm old and lazy, and
don't relish the idea of lifting 75 pound vises up and down from/to
the mill table.
The point is that a Bridgeport is designed to hold this kind of
weight and more, and if dual vises is in your future plans, you ought
to think about that when you do your CNC retrofitting.
