Its good to see some examples of this employed but, I've noticed these are solutions employed by foreign manufacturers. It's probably one of those "thats just the way we do it here" situations. Of course the horsepower required for a camshaft makes it not a very good general comparison. I dont see a problem with a rigid idler on the load side other than all the hysteria that was present when US cars started using the serpentine belts and the unusual amount of exacting care they required. Remember? Dont bend them when installing, dont hang them on a nail etc. They are somewhat similar to the toothed belts we use for power transmission for cnc. The only effect I would predict would be the service life of the belt may be a bit shorter. However, homebuilts are not intended for 100% duty cycle.
