Dave,
If you do a run on the Motioneering software I will venture
a guess that price/performance will max out at a reduction
of about 2-4 times.
If you are unfamiliar with the software I can do a run for you...
I have to quote an industrial plama machine anyway.
You would have to email me machine moving mass, size, performance,
friction, etc estimates.

OK, so with a Servo, the best performance is at/near top speed.
Motors are not too expensive, so you can buy one that is 5 times your
need in power, and run it at 1/5th speed. (not that you would want
to, but this is just for discussion) That way, you get the power you
need in the speed range you want. The alternative is to spend more
time with belt ratios and such.
