As an addittional bit of info, most of the video chips
like Cirrus Logic and Chips already have the lcd
interface built in, for all the differant types of flat
displays. The older lcd type flat panel display
just about required a person to use them in a dark
room, and would be very poor for a control application.

Not very easy to do. The laptops have integrated display control chips
on the
board that are made to drive the display from the video memory. There
are a few
companies that sell LCD kits that have either a general purpose LCD
driver
board that looks to the software like an ordinary VGA, or a set with a
display
together with the driver board. These kits are not cheap
