Well, in fact, this has been done. You can run EMC over the network
using the laptop
as an X server. All you need to do is enter one command, set
display=laptop:0.0
(where laptop is the TCP/IP network name of the laptop computer) and any
programs
that create X display windows will create them on the laptop, instead of
the local
machine's screen. I think, but I'm not sure, that X will need to be
running on the
local machine, too. I'm sure there is a tricky technical way to make
the local machine
accept X connections without having an X server running on its own
console, but
I'm sure I don't know how to do that.

The only risk is that if the network croaks, you lose control of the EMC
program.
The local X server can croak, too, but is usually pretty reliable.
