There was quite an extensive discussion over on Mach list regarding this very thing, using the CNC4PC spindle pulse reader.

It was like 5-7 days ago. If I remember correctly, a 2 inch disc was used with like a 90 degree section missing. Narrower slots were causing problems. The user got it resolved.
