Hi Bill,

If you want to consider a reflective sensor, have a look at the OMRON
EE-SY672. DigiKey have them OR532-ND, at $25.70 I think. They also have the
matching connector EE-1001 OR527-ND @ $2.84. Connector plus 2m cable EE-1006
OR559-ND @ $13.50.

The Sensor runs of 5V, has signal conditioning and amplifier circuitry in
it. Also a LED to see what is going on, plus a sensitivity adjustment. It's about
as "Plug & Play" as you will get.

You can hook it straight up to your breakout board.
