I'd have to agree. I have an EMCO encoder disk with 32 holes, about 6"
diameter. I've made up encoder disks for my robot's wheels, about 3"
diameter and 8 or more small holes. Worked fine. Both use the
opto-interrupter style that was pictured in the IP pix.

90 degree cutout would give you a WIDE pulse alright! What pulse width is
needed by the controller software?

If you want, get it, tell me the opto used, and we can look up the sensor
diameter. I probably have one, or something similar and we can examine the
pulse width generated.
