The encoder wheel can be any resolution, but, there needs to be
one "marker spot" on the wheel for the index signal for threading.
I believe you could get away with a single slotted disc. I believe
this is also why the other suggestion of a 90 "degree slot", to make
sure there is only one spot on the disc for mach to sense for thread
start.

I made a disc for my spindle on the router that used 3 slots as I
needed 3:1 ratio - worked fine on the mill software.
