Hi Ken,

The device you may be interested in is known as a maximator.

Its a liquid pump that that is driven by an air compressor. They come
in a variety of ranges and operate on 1 to 10 bar air pressure input
and can produce liquid pressures upto 75000 psi or 5500 bar output.
Perfect for making a waterjet cutter. Best thing about them is that
they are a fairly small unit and could possibly be mounted direct to
a z axis.
