Driver Test is not much use as far as I can tell. My 'mucky' ones runs
fine, but the clean ones stuttered all over the place :(

You need check that the parallel port *IS* producing 5V - I'm not used
to seeing them at all on laptops in the last few years - but it does
sound as if the port is running OK.

The next thing is to run through the optimization list from arts site.

I find I need to switch off ACPI to get clean fast movement, and Dell
have a habit of 'playing' with the drivers so it would not surprise me
if that is playing up. You HAVE killed the anti-virus and other
background tasks? That will prevent any chance of clean operation :)
