I am by no means anything more than a Linux noobie; however I will
tell you that there is another application for Linux that is rather
intensive and requires one to have a hardware configuration that
leaves no opportunity for 'hiccups.' This is the Mythtv, it would do
anyone interested in hardware well to do some lurking on their groups
and websites as they have done much work troubleshooting hardware to
get it to optimum.
I will say, having read much, and set up two of those machines, and
now one EMC2 on one of my 'retired' mythtvs, that the distillation of
what they've taught me is to use Nvidia chipsets for graphics and
mobos. Avoid the latest and greatest anything, and when in doubt, do a
search for whatever specific piece of hardware you're contemplating on
one of their forums.
