Avoid laptops wherever possible, too many power saving/resource sharing
processes involved. Some can be got to work, if you know what you are
doing, some just can't.

It could be something as simple as network card polling (set fixed rate
or disable), power saving/charging, invasive software like quicktime's
qttask.exe or some other background task.

Never had to turn ACPI off, or do anything other than the above, on a
suitable desktop machine. Out of 30 or so different motherboards I've
tried, only found one combination that Mach wouldn't run on. That had a
VIA chipset and onboard graphics, and thankfully isn't made by Asus
anymore ;)
