What you are looking for is exactly what I wanted a while back when
looking at building a laser tracker type system. Laser trackers use
either interferometery or phase shift based time of flight. Phase
shift based time of flight provides absolute distance measurement
which is exactly what you want really. Unfortunately there seems to
be a gap between the hand held TOF measuring devices from Leica with
resolution of around +/-1.5mm and those used in the laser trackers
(microns).
That said I'm sure at least one of those links has a TOF based system
with good range and resolution, I couldn't use it because it would not
work with a corner cube retro reflector.
