A Renishaw ball-bar tester is a very portable system that is used to do axis
alignment and backlash tests on large machining centers. It is sensitive
enough that you don't need to cover the full traverse of the machine to
pick up orthogonality errors easily. They are not cheap, though. They are
also a LOT more accurate than a tape measure!
