As far as I know Dave that's about correct.

In the UK when we are offered cheap PC's it's anybodies guess what you get,
and one processor at 1GHz isn't the same as another.

I use a P4 3GHz with 1GB of Ram for mach because I was lucky enough to have
one spare, so am not really qualified to say how much lower you can cut
this.

I would have thought 1.7GHz of most would be adequate, but for instance many
laptops have loads of problems, some have problems with the motherboard
bias, could be them could be the motherboard, as soon as you think you've
got it nailed, something might rear it's head.

So I think it would be worth asking your supplier what you are being
offered, and asking on the mach group is someone else is using that
successfully.

I am pretty sure the answer for a 1.7GHz will be yes, but the confidence
booster won't harm you neither.

How fast is fast enough ?

I thought anything over 1ghz was fine ?

I see a lot of 1.7ghz boxes going for cheap.
